Congress to Count Electoral Votes, Confirm Trump Win

The 115th Congress will convene on Friday, Jan. 6, at 1 p.m. (ET) to count the state electoral ballots for the president and vice president of the United States, supposedly confirming the victories of Donald Trump and Mike Pence.

The Nov. 8 general election gave Trump and Pence 306 electoral votes, more than they 270 they needed to win. Though Hillary Clinton and her running mate, Tim Kaine, won the popular vote by more than 2 million, they only received 232 electoral votes.

Vice President Joe Biden, president of the Senate, will preside over the joint session and, once the ballots are counted, will officially declare those elected to America’s highest two positions.

If confirmed by the count, Trump and Pence will be sworn in to office on Jan. 20.
